A worker has died at the Brightstar mine in Western Australia yesterday morning in a workplace accident involving the operation of machinery.
According to the West Australian, Mines Safety director Andrew Chaplyn said it is believed a male worker was fatally injured while operating machinery, believed to be a forklift.
Police, Mines Safety inspectors, and specialist investigators are all currently investigating the cause of the incident.
Stone Resources, a Chinese-owned company operates the mine located near Laverton in WA, however its believed the man was employed by CPC Engineering.
The death marks the eighth fatality in Australian mining this year:
January: A loader operator was killed in a mud rush at the Mount Lyell copper mine in Tasmania.
February: A worker was killed in an underground rock fall at the Harlequin mine in WA
February: A maintenance worker was killed at the Gove Aluminum Refinery in the Northern Territory
April: Two workers died in a rib burst event at the Austar Mine in the Hunter Valley
May: An electrician collapsed and died at the Grasstree Mine near Middlemount in Queensland
May: A worker died from head and neck injuries while working on a cherry picker at the Boggabri Mine in NSW.
