Fatality at Glencore’s Ravensworth Mine in Hunter Valley

A contractor has been crushed to death by a coal truck at Glencore’s Ravensworth open cut mine in the Hunter Valley near Singleton in NSW.

Operations at the mine were immediately shut down after the accident that occurred  just before midnight on Saturday.

Speaking to the ABC, a spokesperson for the CFMEU said it appears the trainee drove past a haulage road give-way sign in their 4WD vehicle and into the path of a coal truck carrying  a full load.

The driver of the coal truck was not injured but was taken to Singleton Hospital suffering shock.

NSW police and government mine inspectors are currently investigating the incident.

In a statement Glencore said its “primary concern is for the safety, care and welfare of our employees and we are providing all possible support for the families of the people involved”.
