Free online workplace health and safety presentation

safety history coal mineMichelle Baxter, Acting Chief Executive Officer of Safe Work Australia is encouraging safety professionals to tune-in to tomorrow to Professor Dennis Else’s free presentation on the history and challenges for workplace health and safety.

Professor Else’s presentation Past, present and future work health and safety challenges and opportunities is part of the Australian Strategy Virtual Seminar Series and will be broadcast at 10am AEST, 2 October 2014 from www.safeworkaustralia.gov.au/vss.

“Professor Else’s presentation draws on his over four decades of experience in the work health and safety academic and business community, taking us on an inspirational journey through the five ages of safety,” said Ms Baxter.

“From our first humble attempts to protect workers’ lives to our current more sophisticated approaches I am pleased to have Professor Else present his insights. His engaging presentation will be of great interest to anyone who cares about workers’ safety.”

Professor Else said “we must ensure work is designed to respect and accommodate our human variability. This is often an untapped business asset, if used wisely it can help us become more innovative – solving issues and contributing to better health and safety, business productivity and sustainability.”

Professor Else is currently Executive Director, Sustainability, Safety and Health at Brookfield Multiplex Australasia and he is also a board member of the Cooperative Research Centre for Low Carbon Living based at the University of New South Wales. Professor Else was also Chair of the National Occupational Health and Safety Commission, and Dean of Engineering and Science and pro vice-chancellor at the University of Ballarat.

The Australian Strategy Virtual Seminar Series is a free online seminar series run throughout Safe Work Australia Month in October. It showcases the latest work health and safety thinking, developments, innovations and research by work health and safety regulators, experts, business leaders and academics.

It supports the Australian Work Health and Safety Strategy 2012-2022 and its vision for all Australian workers to have healthy, safe and productive working lives.
