Grub in the broccoli causes strike at Gladstone gas plant

A rogue caterpillar on a piece of broccoli has brought construction on a Gladstone gas plant to a screaming halt, after workers voted to strike over food safety.

Construction workers at the Central Queensland QCLNG site claim the kitchens at the workers camp are unsanitary and a danger to workers’ health.

Speaking to the ABC, Phil Golby from the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union said that workers have been given food infested with maggots and dirty cutlery to use.

He said that the workers have experienced uncooked chicken, maggots and hair in their food.

A spokesperson for managing contractor, Bechtel, said the strike was illegal and there was no basis for the claims of poor safety.

The employer said that there was an isolated incident with a caterpillar being found in a piece of broccoli and that the unions are overreacting.
