The International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) is asking individuals and organisations to help it improve the environmental and social performance of the mining and metals industry through a world-wide consultation. The online survey is available in English, French, Portuguese, Spanish and Japanese and will close on Friday, 18 May 2018.

Help ICMM make mining more sustainable

The objective is to set a benchmark for responsible mining practices that members, and other responsible mining and metals companies, can publicly commit to.

Currently, ICMM company members implement 10 Principles and 8 Position Statements on specific issues like water stewardship and revenue transparency. They report annually on their sustainable development performance, and their reports are independently assured to confirm that they meet our high membership requirements.

ICMM aims to develop a more comprehensive set of requirements for how members are expected to manage a broad range of sustainability issues and to validate this at their operational sites.

Aidan Davy, ICMM’s Chief Operating Officer said: “We are committed to mining with principles and our members lead in driving sustainable development through the mining industry. But we are not complacent, so we are asking people about their expectations of how a responsible mining company should operate.

“The consultation feedback will help us update our membership requirements which will drive further improvements in the social and environmental performance of mine sites and processing plants.”

What happens next?

At the end of the consultation, a summary of the feedback will be compiled and published on ICMM’s website. The feedback from the consultation will inform the final version of our membership requirements which ICMM expects to complete next year.

Guidance to support companies with implementing any new performance expectations will be developed in parallel, along with details of the process to check progress.
