A multinational mining company plans to construct a new coal development in Queensland’s Central Highlands region.

BHP recently applied for federal approval to construct its new $1 billion Blackwater South Coal Project, about 230km west of Rockhampton.

The proposal involves building a new coal operation next to BHP Mitsubishi Alliance’s (BMA’s) Blackwater Coal Mine in Stewarton. It will extract up to 10 million tonnes (Mt) of coal per annum for up to 90 years.

The development will also sustain BMA’s existing mining province, creating up to 750 construction jobs plus a further 1200 operational positions in the process.

“The action is a separate project from the adjacent, currently operating Blackwater mine. However, there is some potential of shared infrastructure between the projects,” the company said according to Fairfax Media.

BMA’s most productive operation for 2021 was Goonyella, which produced 8.3Mt of saleable coal.
