The Margaret River Region is world famous for its tall karri forests, pristine beaches, wonderful wildlife, spectacular landscapes, peaceful walk trails and epic surf breaks… so get amongst it all and get back to nature!

Caves
The Margaret River Region offers visitors some of the most unique and stunning cave experiences in Australia. Along the spine of the Leeuwin Naturaliste Ridge and beneath soaring karri forest lie more than 150 caves. These caves belong to a series of complex and fragile karst systems which are landscapes formed by the rapid drainage of water underground. Karst systems are characterised most often by caves, dolines (large craters), blind valleys, sinking streams and springs. The main road that travels along the Leeuwin Naturaliste Ridge is aptly named Caves Road. The Augusta Margaret River Tourism Association operates four spectacular show caves; Lake, Mammoth, Jewel and Moondyne Caves.

Cape to Cape Track
For a more hands-on approach when visiting the area the intrepid traveller can journey along the Cape to Cape Track, stretching from Cape Leeuwin to Cape Naturaliste. The total journey takes between 5-6 days with plenty of delightful stops and welcome camping rests along the walk. For those a little less adventurous, many sections of the trail make for a most enjoyable short stroll. Section maps are available from the Augusta and Margaret River Visitor Centres.

Whale watching
Each year Humpback and Southern Right whales make the long journey from Antarctica to the warm pristine waters of the Margaret River Region. Flinders Bay in Augusta is the “first port of call” for many whales that come to feed, breed and play from June to September. Whale watching here is a unique experience because it’s one of the few places in the world where you can observe Southern Right and Humpback whales interacting. From September to December you can watch whales in the north of the Margaret River Region in the sheltered Geographe Bay. Endangered Blue Whales have also been spotted here. Spot these incredible creatures from many scenic vantage points (the binoculars at the Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse are great) or get up close on a whale watching tour.

CaveWorks
CaveWorks is a fascinating eco-centre with impressive displays of caves set amongst the beautiful natural environment of the Leeuwin-Naturaliste Ridge. A free pass to CaveWorks is included in your cave ticket.

Lake Cave & the Events Deck
Directly below CaveWorks lies Lake Cave, the deepest show cave in the Margaret River region, featuring a stunning and pristine chamber. Inside the cave a tranquil lake reflects delicate formations that will take your breath away. You’ll find a new wooden deck with glass portholes which suspends over the doline and takes in spectacular views.

Mammoth Cave
Mammoth Cave is a natural capsule and home to ancient fossil remains of extinct animals. It also features an audio self-guiding system, allowing visitors to travel through the fascinating underworld at their own pace.

Jewel Cave
Jewel Cave seems to defy nature and dwarf those who enter its lofty chambers. This spectacular recess with its intricate decorations and sheer magnitude is home to one of the longest straw stalactites to be found in any tourist cave in the world. Recently re-developed, the Jewel Cave Preservation Centre features an ecologically sensitive building design housing interpretation, retail and cafe areas.

Moondyne Cave
Moondyne is open from June to December and offers an exclusive intimate guided cave tour where participants wear gloves, overalls and hard hats. Get up close and personal with Moondyne Cave guided only by torchlight and your experienced Cave Guide – this is an unparalleled experience in the South West!

Leeuwin Lighthouse
The historic Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse at Augusta is situated at the most south westerly tip of Australia, standing at the point where the Indian and Southern Oceans meet. This famous landmark is over 100 years old and remains an important working lighthouse. Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse is situated 10 minutes drive south of Augusta.

Food, wine & beer

The outstanding wine, gourmet food, craft beer and fresh produce in the Margaret River Region culminates to create the ultimate sensory experience.

A young history
Dr John Gladstone, a viticultural scientist, first highlighted the Margaret River Region’s suitability for wine producing in the mid 1960’s. The first vines were planted in the Wilyabrup area in 1967 by Dr Tom Cullity, on the property which he named ‘Vasse Felix’. This planting was soon followed by those at Moss Wood, Cape Mentelle, Cullen Wines and Sandalford Wines.

Climate & varieties
The climate of the Margaret River Region is cool temperate Mediterranean maritime, with warm, dry summers and cool wet winters. This means consistent wine vintages, because vines are not affected by extreme summer and winter temperatures. The climate is very similar to that of Bordeaux in France, hence Bordeaux varieties also thrive in Margaret River. The true backbone of the Margaret River Region’s wines remains its exceptional cabernets and chardonnays, although other grape varieties are showing great promise in this relatively youthful appellation.

Dining
Whilst exploring the region you will discover a huge range of renowned restaurants and wineries, many of which have won awards for the quality of the food that they serve. Meals ranging from tasty breakfasts and casual brewery lunches, all the way up to wine-matched degustations and “Trust the Chef” experiences can be enjoyed at the stopover of your choice.

Craft beer
An expanding microbrewery culture has emerged in recent years with several unique operators offering their own locally brewed craft beer. Crisp pale ale, pilsener and kolsch (to name a few!) are partnered with gourmet takes on Australian ‘pub grub’ to create a match made in heaven – perfect for a lazy afternoon in the sun!

Margaret River Gourmet Escape
The Margaret River Gourmet Escape in November is an outstanding opportunity to get a taste of everything the region has to offer for food, wine and beer lovers, with celebrity chefs, pop-up masterclasses, long lunches, beach barbeques and the heart of the festival – the Gourmet Village at Leeuwin Estate Winery.

Farmers Markets
Margaret River regularly hosts its popular Farmers Markets for one and all to grab a fresh, tasty bargain with heaps of locally produced food and other goodies. Stalls are manned by the growers and producers themselves providing you with a diverse range of prime south west produce.

Getting There:

By Car 

Main Route: The journey from Margaret River takes approximately three hours by car. Take the Kwinana Freeway out of Perth city, which eventually becomes Forrest Highway, and follow the signs to Bunbury, then Busselton – the main roads will bypass these towns but feel free to drop in. Margaret River is 50km south of Busselton. When you start to see vineyards – you’re nearly there.

Alternative route: South Western Highway is the inland route which is a little slower, but quite scenic. The South Western Highway guides you inland from the suburb of Armadale, Pinjarra, Waroona, Harvey, Brunswick Junction and on into Bunbury then Busselton and through to Margaret River.

By Air
SkyWest (operated by Virgin Australia) flies direct to the Margaret River Region (Busselton Airport) twice weekly from Perth. Wild Blue Helicopters are also happy to accommodate transfers to and from Perth.

By Bus
Bus services between Perth and Margaret River operate daily through South West Coach Lines and TransWA. Please note these times and prices are subject to change and should be officially checked.
