Premier welcomes Amrun Project milestone for Qld jobs, investment

Rio Tinto’s $2.6 billion Amrun bauxite project near Weipa was progressing well, with $1 billion spent with Queensland suppliers and almost 1000 jobs onsite.

Meeting with Rio Tinto Chief Executive Officer Jean-Sébastien Jacques in Cairns, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said construction of the Amrun project is almost a third complete and on track for the start of bauxite shipments in the first quarter of 2019.

“Queensland suppliers represent more than two-thirds (68%) of all supply for the project,” the Premier said.

“There are currently 930 construction workers on site, with 96 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander workers.

“I welcome Rio Tinto’s commitment to the Cape, far north Queensland and our State.”

“Since the 2015 State election, more than 69,300 jobs have been created in Queensland,” she said.

“Key projects in resources and energy are contributing new jobs, tourism is booming and agriculture is performing well despite the drought as well as new industries including large-scale renewables, biofuels and our commitment to innovation.

My Government is partnering with industry and business to grow opportunities for Queensland.”
