A multinational mineral producer recently spent big on small, local and indigenous businesses.

BHP’s local buying program recently awarded a total of 67,000 work packages, collectively worth more than $1 billion. A total of 1600 suppliers won tenders and were promised to be paid within an average of seven days.

They had bid for supply opportunities through an onboarding, procurement and payment process facilitated by both BHP and program partner C-Res.

“BHP depends on the capability and talent of the many small, local and indigenous businesses who support our operations across Australia,” BHP minerals Australia president Geraldine Slattery said in a public statement.

“This money has helped businesses grow, helped sponsor sports teams and helped provide jobs and opportunities for community members. We look forward to continuing our partnership with BHP as we work towards the next $1B,” C-Res CEO Tracey Cuttriss-Smith added.
