GF Piping Systems with Rapid Assistance in Florence

Italian Road Collapse

On Wednesday, 25 May 2016 in the centre of the Italian city of Florence a road has partially collapsed; creating a 200 metre long and seven metre wide valley. Some 20 cars that were parked on the street along the Arno River slipped into the hole partially sinking into the water and mud masses. Florence is an extremely popular tourist area and is the capital of the Tuscany region which has around 400,000 inhabitants. The fire brigade evacuated two buildings on the street. The Task Force suggests that a broken water pipe under the ground is responsible for the collapse. The hole was right in front of the world famous “Ponte Vecchio”. There were no personal injuries but a large amount of construction damage occurred.
