A resources mogul will employ an environmental advocate to lead his new team.

Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) recently appointed Michael Gunner to head-up Fortescue Future Industries’ (FFI’s) new Northern Australia division.

The former Labor Northern Territory chief minister, who strongly opposed seabed mining, vowed to use his new role to phase-out fossil fuels for future generations.

“Do it for the kids,” he said in a public statement.

“My message is clear: FFI is committed to aggressively reducing emissions and FFI is here now. I will be leading our local race to real zero.”

Gunner confessed he believes in an environmental theory that burning fossil fuels creates carbon dioxide emissions, which can influence long-term weather patterns.

“We must bring the same urgency to the climate change race to real-zero that we did with the global COVID pandemic. FFI will do it by backing in Territorians, local jobs and local businesses, to work with us to fight the fossil fuel-led climate disaster,” he said.

“By going hard commercially at real-zero at FFI we help make the genuine impacts on climate change that the world needs.”

The former politician is expected to start work in November 2022 when he is no longer restricted by the NT ministerial code of conduct. He resigned from chief minister duties back in May and political life two months later.

FMG founding chair Andrew Forrest welcomed Gunner’s comments as “clear evidence” the company is transitioning to a “global, green renewable and resources” producer.

“It is people like Michael Gunner who will help us ensure that our ambitions become a reality,” he said.
