4th LNG plant for Qld’s Curtis Island gets approval

GLNG Aerials LNG tanksA fourth gas plant for Curtis Island near Gladstone in Queensland is set to go ahead with the federal government approving Arrow Energy’s $17 billion LNG project.

Federal Environment Minister, Greg Hunt also approved Arrow’s 9.45km underwater pipeline, connecting the mainland to the island.

Arrow Energy said on Tuesday it warmly welcomed the approval which it believed would create around 4000 jobs.

Speaking to the CQ News,Gladstone Mayor Gail Sellers said the announcement was good news for Gladstone, coming so close to Christmas.

“It is positive, and we’re interested to hear more from Arrow about how they will take this forward.” She said the new jobs the Arrow project would bring could help offset a “ramping down” of work on the existing three projects from mid-next year.

Mr Hunt said “some of the strictest conditions in Australian history” had been applied to the projects.
