Deaths in mining have doubled in past year

The number of deaths in mining has doubled over the past 12 months according to figures just released by SafeWork Australia.

There were 10 fatalities on Australian mine worksites in 2013 compared to 5  in 2012. Half of 2013’s fatalities occurred in just the last five weeks of the year, prompting calls for more vigilance in safety in the lead up to major holiday periods including Christmas and Easter.

However, across all industries in Australia, overall there were 28 less workplace fatalities in 2013 than there were in 2012.

The transport, postal and warehousing sector recorded the highest number of fatalities in Australia last year, at 50 – considerably down from 75 in 2012.

Already in 2014 there have been 3 workplace fatalities in the transport, agriculture and health care sectors.
