The Australian Government has set a target for national energy productivity to improve by 40 per cent by 2030 to help reduce Australians’ energy bills and tackle climate change.
“Improving national energy productivity is the smart way to tackle climate change because it encourages economic growth while reducing emissions,” Minister for Industry and Science Ian Macfarlane said.
“The National Energy Productivity Plan will make an important contribution to Australia’s action to meet our 2030 greenhouse gas emissions reduction target.
“Improving energy productivity means household consumers benefit through lower energy bills. Businesses reduce their energy costs and improve their output, making them more competitive.
“At the same time, Australia reduces its carbon footprint and contributes to the global challenge of reducing climate change.”
The 40 per cent improvement target will be met through a National Energy Productivity Plan, which the COAG Energy Council has agreed to develop using a coordinated national approach.
“The National Energy Productivity Plan will include measures to make energy choices easier and to improve energy products and services,” Mr Macfarlane said.
“These include market reforms to improve competition and innovation, like more efficient prices and reducing barriers to new products.
”The plan will cover all type of energy users, from householders and small business, to large industrials and government. It will be broad across all sectors, including buildings, appliances, transport, energy services and power generation.
“I will work with the states and territories to develop the implementation plan through the COAG Energy Council.”
