Fatality at Gove alumina refinery in Northern Territory

A 61 year old worker has died at Rio Tinto’s recently mothballed Gove alumina refinery in Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory.

The incident happened yesterday as the worker was completing maintenance work on the controversial refinery that is due to be closed permanently by July. The site has now been closed for 24 hours to allow investigations to be completed.

NT News is reporting the man’s son, who also works at the refinery, was one of the first people at the scene of the accident.

The ABC reports that Worksafe NT has commenced an investigation and that “events leading up to the man’s death remain unclear”.

The company says it is providing support to the employee’s family and work colleagues.
