Glennies Creek and Camberwell mines in Hunter Valley to close

500 jobs will be lost from the Glennies Creek and Camberwell mines near Singleton in the NSW Hunter Valley, after mine owners announced late last week that both operations are to be closed.

Speaking to the ABC, Peter Jordan from the Construction Forestry Mining and Energy Union said they had no prior warning or the closures, with the news coming as something of a shock to locals.

It’s believed the high Australian dollar combined with low prices for coal on the global market have led to the decision to close the mines.

“We’re talking all up about 500 jobs there, so that’s going to have a massive impact on the Singleton and surrounding towns where most of those workers and their families live,” Jordan told the ABC.

“I’d like to think that this is not going to happen but we’re hearing that this might be an arrangement to shut down the mines temporarily and restart it under some operation.”

Integra is owned by parent company,Vale who operates mine throughout NSW and Queensland.

According to the Newcastle Herald, workers at Glennies Creek have been asked to stay at home on full pay, while employees at Camberwell are still working for the present time.

Dates and details around when the mines will shut are expected to be announced this week.
