Hail Creek contractors face pay cuts

Coal

Contractors are facing a pay cut at Rio Tinto’s Hail Creek mine in yet another cost-cutting measure by the mining company.

Workers employed by WorkPac received a letter early this week, which stated their pay packet would be slashed.

“…WorkPac must reduce its current costs to the client as an alternative to losing our commercial contract and/or contributing to the eventual demise of the mine itself”,” the letter told employees.

Workpac stated they “have no other choice” but to reduce the hourly rate from January 18.

“Please be assured that WorkPac has not made this decision lightly … but in reflection this method appeared to be the only viable alternative that could keep you in employment at the moment,” the letter said.
