Cutting-edge geoscience, funded by the State Government’s Exploration Incentive Scheme (EIS), has sparked new exploration for diamonds in Western Australia’s Kimberley region.
Junior explorers are using the Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety’s Geological Survey of WA (GSWA) geoscience datasets and geological information to identify targets for diamond exploration.
Perth-based DevEx Resources has applied for eight exploration licences, covering about 2700 sq km, between Rio Tinto’s Argyle diamond mine and the former Ellendale mine in the south-west Kimberley.
The resurgence of interest in the Kimberley follows the discovery of diamonds at Lucapa Diamond Company’s Little Spring Creek prospect, and encouraging exploration by India Bore Diamond Holdings and POZ Minerals.
The GSWA diamond prospectivity report, released earlier this year, helped DevEx target these exploration areas.
This report contains data from more than 88,000 diamond exploration samples and 30,000 high-quality mineral chemical analyses.
