More job cuts for BHP’s Olympic Dam mine

BHP Billiton has confirmed that 380 staff would be axed from it’s Olympic Dam mine in South Australia as the company continue to “simplify”.

The latest round of job cuts is the third for the mining giant in eight months at the Olympic Dam copper mine, with 140 redundancies made at the BHP corporate office in Adelaide in June, and 220 roles cut in January this year.

According to a spokesperson for the company, the latest rounds of redundancies resulted from a June review.

“At Olympic Dam, we continue to simplify our business to ensure we are operating as efficiently as possible. This is consistent with the work being done in other BHP Billiton operations, and across the resources sector, and reflects the challenging external environment,” the spokesperson said.

The latest redundancies at Olympic Dam are set to take effect by mid-September.

It has been reported that almost all the positions to be axed will be on-site operator positions, with some managerial and supervisor positions also cut.
