Mt Lindsay tin and tungsten mine in Tasmania gets State approval

The Mt Lindsay Tin/Tungsten Project is set to go ahead with Venture Minerals announcing yesterday that the Tasmanian Minister for Resources, Paul Harriss,  had granted the mining lease for the project.

The open cut project now needs to secure Commonwealth environmental approval before it can go ahead.

The project had met with fierce opposition from environmental groups, however the Minister dismissed their objections, saying they were, “utter rubbish”.

The lease, which covers an area of 1,029 hectares is situated in the State’s north west.

Speaking to the ABC, the Minister said, “The Liberal Government will not be apologising for approving a mining lease to Venture Minerals for Mount Lindsay,” he said.

“The application was thoroughly assessed by Mineral Resources Tasmania in accordance with all relevant legislation.

“Comments by a Green front group, Save The Tarkine, are complete and utter rubbish and a continuation of the relentless campaign by this organisation to destroy this mining project.”

Save the Tarkine’s spokesperson, Scott Jordan, said the appropriate information regarding environmental impact had not been provided.

“If the company hasn’t provided those details already as per their ASX statement then the Minister has clearly acted outside of the Mineral Resources Development Act and this lease approval is in fact unlawful,” he said.

“The Minister needs to immediately revoke this unlawful lease and he needs to go back and follow that process.”
