Qld Copper mine flicks FIFO

A copper mine near Cloncurry in Queensland’s remote north west has announced it intends to transition to a 100% local workforce.

Mine owners, Copperchem, have been using a FIFO (fly in, fly out) workforce however they plan to hire up to 50 locals who took part in a local employment programme commissioned by the company at the start of the year.

Speaking to the ABC, Copperchem spokesperson, Bill Sneath, said the move was aimed at reducing the exhorbitant costs associated with FIFO.

“On a seven-on, seven-off roster you are employing two people to cover one role in a lot of areas,” he said.

“We fly employees from Cairns, Townsville and Brisbane and the cost of airflights and accommodation is quite high now.”
