Regional companies are exploring business opportunities at an Asia-backed mining company’s $21.7 billion project in Central Queensland.
Eleven suppliers from the Darling Downs region recently joined a two-day industry briefing in Mackay about India-headquartered Adani Australia’s Carmichael Coal Project, located 160km northwest of Clermont.
Toowoomba and Surat Basin Enterprise (TSBE) confirmed the briefing showed a glimpse of what businesses opportunities are up for grabs and there was an opportunity to with meet representatives from Adani.
“We see the Adani mine, rail and port as an emerging opportunity. We know the Toowoomba and Surat Basin has competition ready companies and our role is to provide those business development opportunities,” TSBE Surat Basin supply chain general manager Reagan Parle says.
TSBE supported bids made by Stonestreets Coaches and Wolff Group.
“Stonestreets has the capacity to compete for contracts in remote areas and has proven itself multiple times with contract wins in Gladstone, Far North Queensland including Weipa, Darwin and other areas over the past four years. Wolff group have carried out mine operations for firms such as BMA, Peabody and Wesfarmers,” Parle says.
“TSBE also identifies that Toowoomba has enhanced connectivity with weekly flights from Wellcamp Airport to Townsville through Airnorth. Townsville is where the regional office will be located for the $21 billion project and we can easily get workers with expertise to there.”
TSBE arranged business development meetings and linked them to tendering opportunities.
“Adani has communicated a decision is to be made on the project in 2017, and some primary topics of supply chain interest include accommodation, transport and logistics, and infrastructure establishment and we can compete for that,” Parle says.
TSBE is holding a Toowoomba Transport and Logistics Symposium from February 27 to March 1, and invites interested suppliers to learn more about road, rail and air capabilities.
