HIGH ENERGY PRICES ARE HURTING CONSUMERS

Statement from David Byers,
Interim Chief Executive, Minerals Council of Australia

The Minerals Council of Australia welcomes Manufacturing Australia’s comments calling for energy consumers to be placed at the centre of energy policy.

Over the past decade Australia has moved from having some of the lowest to some of the highest energy prices in the developed world.

This is hurting the international competitiveness of Australian businesses – including Australia’s mining operations which are significant energy users – while also impacting Australian families.

Between 2012 and 2030 almost 40 per cent of Australia’s low cost baseload plant is likely to retire. Policy settings need to ensure that ageing baseload (24/7) generation is replaced with low cost, reliable energy.

As a country, we should be focusing on how to reduce energy costs, not limiting increases, as well as reducing emissions and improving reliability.
