A major development is one step closer to construction in North Queensland’s Etheridge Shire.

The State Department of Development, Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning recently granted prescribed project status to Genex Power’s Kidston Clean Energy Hub, 382km west of Cairns.

The declaration will help the proponent navigate through final steps of regulatory approval and fast-track future development at the Kidston Wind Farm. It also lets State Coordinator-General Toni Power intervene in the approvals process to ensure timely decision-making as required. QMEB can reveal the development worth $295 million is expected to create 200 construction positions plus a further 10 operational roles.

TEi Services and another 20 local suppliers based in Townsville, Ingham and Cairns have already partnered with Powerlink Queensland to deliver the transmission line between both the hub and national electricity grid.

“Our team commenced fabrication of the tubular steel for Mount Fox substation this week in preparation to deliver 40 tonnes for the project,” TEi general manager Richard Parker said in a public statement.

“Our project team has been working hard, in partnership with principal contractor UGL, to maximise local employment and procurement opportunities wherever possible for Powerlink’s program of works. The expertise and capabilities of North Queensland businesses will deliver contracts valued at nearly $14M and support 400 local jobs, which is a key focus,” Powerlink chief executive Paul Simshauser added.
