A multinational employer received the nod to proceed with a major fossil fuel development in Queensland’s Central Highlands region.
Authorities recently approved Sojitz Blue’s Gregory Crinum Coal Expansion in Lilyvale, 332km west of Rockhampton.
The decision means the open-cut mine will produce an extra 1.5 million tonnes of metallurgical coal a year for the next two decades. Operations will continue until at least 2073.
“The Albanese government has to make decisions in accordance with the facts and the national environmental law – that is what happens on every project, and that is what has happened here,” Federal Environment and Water Minister Tanya Plibersek said according to the Australian Associated Press.
The remarks came after the federal government granted Idemitsu Australia another nine years to operate its Ensham Coal Mine, 259km west of Rockhampton. It also approved Bowen Coking Coal’s Isaac River Coal Project, 130km southwest of Mackay.
