North-West Tasmania will soon get a third new mining project according to Tasmanian Premier Lara Giddings.
During a visit to a mining services company yesterday, Ms Giddings said she expected Venture Minerals’ proposal for a $200 million tin mine at Mount Lindsay to be approved in the very near future.
The new development is expected to create 1000 jobs and will become the latest mining project for the region, joining Venture’s Riley Creek mine and the recently approved Shree Metals mine at Nelson Bay
The premier said the future of Tasmania’s mining industry now looked promising.
“We have seen a little slowing of the mining industry in recent times and with that dark cloud that was hanging over the Tarkine there was a level of pessimism coming into the mining investment sector here in Tasmania,” Ms Giddings said.
“But with that dark cloud now removed, we are seeing positive moves to mining investment in this state.”
“The Resources Minister, Bryan Green, recently approved Shree Minerals’ new mine near Balfour and Venture Minerals’ Riley Creek iron ore mine west of Tullah.
“The Riley mine is one of three major projects Venture is developing in the North-West. A mining lease has been granted to the company for its Livingstone project also near Tullah and it is finalising its Mt Lindsay tin and tungsten mine.
“All of these projects will have flow on benefits for surrounding engineering firms and contractors.
“It is vitally important that we support environmentally responsible projects which create jobs and opportunities for Tasmanians.”
Ms Giddings said mining could co-exist with the environmental and cultural values of the Tarkine.
“If all current mining proposals went ahead in the region, together with mines already operating, the total areas would amount to just 1 per cent of the Tarkine.
