Environmentally friendly trucks were delivered to a major resources operation.
Liebherr Mining recently rolled out its first T264 heavy vehicle at Fortescue Metals Group’s Eliwana mine.
A total of 120 trucks will be converted to zero-emission power systems developed by Fortescue Future Industries and Williams Advanced Engineering. The process is expected to take about two years, and result in both battery electric truck and fuel cell electric truck configurations.
Further units will later be available for commercial sale. There is also potential to commercialise zero-emission power systems in other heavy industry applications. The final vehicle is promised to be delivered no later than the year 2030.
The effort is promised to replace 45 per cent of the proponent’s diesel powered vehicles with a “green” mining fleet. Truck haulage activities consumed about 200 million litres of diesel fuel in the 2021 financial year, accounting for 26 per cent of the employer’s scope one emissions.
“Our T264 trucks [have the] ability to integrate future solutions – such as battery technology – while also providing tangible results,” Liebherr-Australia managing director Trent Wehr said in a public statement.
“There will be a phased supply of zero emission haul trucks from Liebherr with the first battery-electric production trucks anticipated to arrive at our Pilbara operations in 2026,” Fortescue chief executive Dino Otranto added.
