A resources multinational revealed plans to transition away from fossil fuels towards emerging technology.

Newmont Corporation recently test-drove its first battery electric underground truck.

The Caterpillar prototype is promised to be fully connected, automated, zero carbon emitting and an end-to-end mining system.

The truck is touted to reduce the risk of collisions in “dark, cramped spaces”. It is also claimed to enhance mine site safety through removing operators from potentially hazardous or remote areas.

“We are building on our foundation of industry-leading autonomous solutions for surface operations, along with our deep experience in underground technology, to provide significant improvement in both productivity and safety for underground mining customers,” Caterpillar resource industries group president Denise Johnson said in a public statement.
