A resources executive, who prefers to recruit foreign nationals, was rewarded with more money and a new job title.

Evolution Mining recently promoted Lawrie Conway to chief executive officer and managing director. As the company’s outgoing finance director and chief financial officer, Conway championed qualified migrant sponsorships.

“I have seen the call from mining companies that labour access, overseas labour, immigration [controls] should be eased. We would be very supportive of that” he previously said.

The mining boss also claimed increasing wages to lure more Australian jobseekers was unsustainable.

“In a tight labour market like we have at the moment access to skills without creating rampant inflation and just not being able to fill roles is critical to the future of the mining industry and, frankly, the economy of the country,” he said.

Conway’s new total fixed remuneration (TFR) will be $990,000 including super. His short-term bonus will be up to 112.5 per cent of his TFR ($1.2 million) and long-term bonus will be as much as 350 per cent of his TFR ($2.2M).

The Minerals Council of Australia (MCA) separately urged the federal government to let a further 195,000 skilled visa holders into the nation.

“[This] will benefit regional communities with an extra 9000 places providing the mining industry an increased talent pool,” MCA CEO Tania Constable said in a public statement.

Constable suggested hiring more foreigners would help ease union disputes over salary and employment conditions.

“The strong contribution of mining – and the opportunities for further minerals development and value adding – must not be compromised by a return to industrial disruption and wage-price inflation, which characterised industry wide bargaining prior to the [Paul] Keating government’s workplace relations reforms,” she said.
