A mining giant’s latest development aimed to improve work conditions in Queensland’s Mackay region.
BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) recently revealed its latest expansion was inspired to improve the employee environment at Hay Point Coal Terminal.
“[The] Shiploader and Berth Replacement (SABR) Project has been designed with a safety mindset – most of the project infrastructure has been built in controlled environments, minimising the exposure of frontline workers to the danger of high-risk work activities such as working over water environments,” the company said in a public statement.
The project involved supplying and installing 15,000 tonnes of steel to reinforce the terminal’s capacity to deliver coal quickly and reliably. Work took more than 250,000 hours to complete and required nearly 700 employees. The site was previously expanded many times since first opening in 1971.
“Completion of the SABR project will improve the terminal’s cyclone immunity and ensure its long-term sustainability,” head of asset projects Gaia Antoniucci said.
The official opening ceremony included tours, a welcome-to-country and smoking ceremony by Yuwi elder Uncle Philip Kemp. A meet and greet dinner with project partners and local dignitaries was also held at the Hay Point Hotel Motel.
