New mining bosses vow to improve work conditions

A resources giant promoted two leaders to top senior roles, promising a better employment environment.

Newmont Corporation recently appointed Mia Gous as Australia senior vice president, and Alex Bates as workplace responsibility senior vice president.

Gous has been Boddington mine general manager since November 2021, and worked in the industry for at least 27 years across Australia, Africa, South America and Europe. Her new responsibilities include staff safety, sustainability, integrity and inclusion.

She replaces Bates who was Australia senior vice president since the year 2017, and been senior operations manager at multinational competitors across the world. As the next workplace responsibility senior vice president Bates promises to foster a “psychologically and physically safe” workplace, which is “free” from assault, harassment, bullying and discrimination.

“They will both be key leaders as we strengthen our commitment to create an environment where everyone is welcomed, feels safe and can contribute – and develop to their full potential,” Newmont president and CEO Tom Palmer said in a public statement.
